There has been some talk going around about the new Windows 10 operating system. Rumored to be released as soon as this summer, the new Windows boasts features such as the personal assistant Cortana and a new browser called Spartan. Regardless of what you have heard, below I have detailed some things.

What will it cost?

Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users can receive the Windows 10 upgrade for free, given that you upgrade within a year of the release. Of course, the catch is that some computers may not have the required hardware to upgrade. Microsoft has stated they will suggest specific requirements in the near future. So what if you don't upgrade within the first year? The pricing has not been released but it seems they will be using a subscription of sorts instead of a bigger purchase up front (similar to Office 365).

How do I upgrade?

Before, you had to buy a disk or use a USB boot device. This time around, the new Windows will be installed via Windows Update. In fact, you can even upgrade to a preview version of Windows 10 today (though it would be best to wait till the official release). This is good news for a lot of people because this will alleviate much of the hassle. You won't lose any of the files you have on your computer, and there's no need to purchase a disk. However, it is highly recommended that a comprehensive backup of your computer be taken (files, software keys, etc).

Why should I upgrade?

Updates are a tricky thing. It takes time for the process (download and installation) to finish, and then there's the longer process of learning the new interface. Those issues are real obstacles. However Windows has tried to ease the pain of upgrading by using the simple Windows Update. Also, there will be no cost to you if you make the move within the first year. There is no need to upgrade, but it is cost-effective in the long term to upgrade before the free software turns into a monthly or yearly subscription.
